HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!

Turning 4o, living in Asia. Who would have imagined either to be true? Not me. Spent a fantastic weekend celebrating both birthdays (Kevin’s and my own) with the girls and close friends. We are truly blessed.

SEA GAMES 2009, LAOS (South East Asian Games)

I spent 16 days with the Singapore National Team in December, the first half in Phuket (Thailand) for a training camp, and the 2nd half in Vientiane for the competition. Team Singapore returned as SEA Games Champions with their best-ever performance, bringing home 14 gold, 8 silver and 11 bronze medals, 12 SEA Games records, 13 National Records and a happy bunch of athletes with 26 personal best times.

We trained at the British International School in Phuket, and I was able to sneak away for a night of Thai karaoke, a nice dinner with the staff, a couple afternoons of shopping and a real Thai massage.

Once we arrived in Laos, there was less time for play and the focus was on the team and swimming fast. The Lao people I believe did an incredible job of hosting the Games, and I felt like the entire population turned out for Opening Ceremonies (where I am, above, with 2 of the staff). The people we met were generous, warm-hearted and helpful, though I didn't get to veer much outside the Games Village, not counting the open air coffee stalls/food shops adjacent to our dorm. I was lucky enough to have a late dinner out on the Mekong Delta, tasting some of the best grilled fish ever. Go Team Singapore!

Happy Birthday girls!

Carmen turns 7 November 1st!

Carmen had an excellent 7th birthday and party. Mom and Dad filled up over 300 water balloons, a friend fulfilled her wish for a Pikachu cake, and she had a great time playing with all her friends from school.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CARMEN!!!

Tatum turns 5 December 16th!

Tatum was lucky enough to have TWO birthday parties, one before everyone started leaving for
Christmas vacation (and before her mom left for Laos) and her second on her real birthday...
Pictures from both parties below (Grammy included).
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TATUM!!!

Happy Halloween

Despite the fact that only the American School and some of the expat community celebrate Halloween, the girls were out in full force in their costumes, and ready to dive in to the candy-ladden extravaganzas at their respective school parties. Carmen dressed up as a witch, and was proud to carry her homemade broom. Tatum was a cheerleader... though we're doubtful her yearning to dance on the sideline with pom poms will carry on much past this year; we'll see.

We had a fantastic evening of trick-or-treating planned with an after-party by the pool, but a torrential rainstorm cut the festivities short... luckily the rain didn't hamper the candy-getting much as we were up and down the three 18 story towers of our condominium complex known as the Grange.

INDIA!

left: bike trip to Palau Ubin (off the coast of Singapore)
right: relaxing at the pool

We were lucky to have my dad and Norin visit Singapore recently, and during their stay we took a 4 day trip to Delhi, Jaipur and Agra (whoops!!! due to Carol's careless ticket reading Dad and Norin had a 3 day trip, sorry!). India is home to 1.2 billion people! Yes, it was chaotic, dirty, polluted and heartwrenchingly sobering. But at the same time I found an unexpected optimism to the people and culture. As a whole, the people we met were intelligent (India has an 82% literacy rate), genuine, proud of their heritage and backgrounds and could be incredible salesmen. Driving the streets of Delhi and making the 200km trips to Jaipur and Agra gave us a real sense of how so many people can co-exist rather peacefully. Two lane roads were shared by camels lumbering with heavy loads, cows, young and old men on bikes, motorcycles, and cars-the last 2 providing a din of beeping so relentless one almost got used to it. All modes of transportation managed to function with amazing grace, negotiating the road with mere centimeters to spare at speeds from 5 to 80 miles/hour, merging, passing and all merrily on their way to their destinations.

Kevin's work takes him to Mumbai (Bombay) relatively often, and I thank him for allowing me to take the family on this Indian adventure, as it was not his first choice for a "vacation." Highlights included:
  • visiting the Taj Mahal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taj_Mahal and many of the other historical sites and monuments;
  • enjoying plenty of yummy Indian fare: garlic and butter naan, palak paneer, tandoori chicken, chicken curries, Kingfisher beer...
  • sharing the experience with Dad and Norin, who were up for the adventure!
  • taking a rickshaw ride through Old Delhi;
  • seeing the Indian countryside, small towns & scenery on the way to Jaipur and Agra.

Mom visits Singapore!

My mom was here for almost the whole month of April, then about 10 more days in May after a quick jaunt to Australia.  We had a great time, and did our best to show my mom all the sights of Singapore, including sampling as much of the varied food here (Chinese, Thai, Indian, Malaysian & Singaporean) that a vegetarian can enjoy (my mom ate a lot of tofu...).  We (my mom and I, along with a friend and her mom) took a 4 day trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia to celebrate her retirement:  despite it being the hottest month of the year (100+, dusty, sweaty), we happily visited temples, an elementary school and the markets to explore what is certainly a fascinating and beautiful country with a sobering history.

***HAPPY RETIREMENT MOM***
Welcome to the rest of your life!
